Managing change

Introduction

This learning guide was written by Liz Carroll, an associate of Ashridge. It is one of a series produced by the Learning Resource Centre. Each guide sets out to give you a quick summary of the main theories on a particular topic backed up by a practical commentary based on Ashridge's long experience of consulting on and teaching management issues. We hope that it whets your appetite for more information. The guide points you in the direction of other sources such as key books, articles and videos.

Where to start

If you have less than an hour, read the overview section and the short best practice essay Change management.

Once you have read the overview section, test your knowledge by attempting the short quiz.

If you have longer take a look at the review of Peter Senge's The dance of change and the short best practice essay Getting all your people committed to change and transformation. Also explore some of the recommended articles and websites in the resources section. The article by Kotter, Leading change: Why transformation efforts fail, provides a good model for managing change in times of major transformational change. The article by Kirkbride et al Change in a chaotic post-modern world, offers some useful insights into programmed and emergent change.
