Managing diversity

This learning guide was written by Tony Montes, a client and programme director at Ashridge. It is one of a series produced by the Learning Resource Centre. Each guide sets out to give you a quick summary of the main theories on a particular topic backed up by practical commentary based on Ashridge's long experience of consulting on teaching management issues. We hope that it whets your appetite for more information. The guide points you in the direction of other sources such as key books, articles, videos websites.

Where to start

If you have less than an hour, read the overview section. This will provide a good definition of the topic as well as presenting readers with key thoughts about the current realities that exist; concepts and priorities; approaches to the management of diversity, diversity and organisational effectiveness, and diversity and the business case for equity. If you have longer read the author's article The Diversity Challenge and the book review of Ron Johnson's and David Redmond's Diversity incorporated. Also take a look at the short best practice essay Boosting business success through diversity. Once you have read the overview section, test your knowledge by attempting the short quiz.

If you have a little more time have a look at the resources section for recommended books, articles and websites on the subject of Managing Diversity and try some of the activities in the activities section.
