Motivating people

This Learning Guide has been written by Dave Jones and Cath Redman, who are Ashridge associates. It is one of a series produced by the Ashridge Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Each guide sets out to give you a quick summary of the main theories on a particular topic, backed up by a practical commentary based on Ashridge's long experience of consulting and teaching management issues. It also points you in the direction of other sources such as key books, articles and videos. We hope that it whets your appetite for more information.

Where to start

If you have less than an hour, read the overview and look at Exercise 5 ' Motivation tips and set yourself some goals to enhance motivation. Also take a look at the book review of The stimulus factor by David Freemantle and the short best practice essay Creating value through people. Once you have read the overview section, test your knowledge by attempting the short quiz.

There are many theories on motivation, but really motivation comes down to understanding your people and treating them as individuals. If you have longer, take a look and some of the articles, books and videos we recommend in the resources section.
